Cannot access certain websites - blank page or missing text

I have Windows XP on a Dell laptop.
It was reporting bad blocks on the C drive, I was able to repair that with CHKDSK.
However, now when I go to a webpage - msn.com for example - text is missing from the page.
I see where the text is supposed to be, sometimes
it will just be blank other times there will be a line.
When I go to google.com I just get a blank page.
Using Firefox I'm able to see the page source when I use "view source" for both of those pages, when I try that with IE8 a box pops up and shows me the
contents of the desktop.
I've booted into Safe mode and logged on as Administrator and have the same results.
I've used MSCONFIG to boot clean and have the same results.
I've scanned (in safe mode) with Malwarebytes and Security Essentials and both come up clean.
I've uninstalled
IE8 and IE7, I have the same result with IE6.
I've re-installed IE8 and have the same result.
I've tried sfc /scannow but it didn't find anything that needed to be repaired.
I've checked the hosts file but it only has localhost listed.
In IE8, when I go to msn.com it tells me that it's shifting to comptatibility mode.
I've tried changing it to "no style" and the missing text does not come back.
I'm totally at a loss here, I can't think of anything else to try.
The only other thing I can think of is to backup the data and re-install XP but the CD drive in this laptop is kind of flaky and I'm not sure if it will make it through the install, and I
don't have another one available.
I'd try to restore to a previous date but I'm not sure when this started happening (it's not my laptop).
I guess I could go back day by day and try it to see when it gets fixed but that's a bit of a PITA.
Any suggestions?

If you opened multiple windows/tabs to the same page, is the missing text the same each time?
If you run CHKDSK again, does it come up as a clean scan or are problems detected and/or resolved?

Use the System File Checker tool to repair corrupted or missing system files:

1. Click Start.
2. Type cmd, and then press CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER to open the elevated command prompt (I.e. Command prompt with administrative rights).
3. The User Account Control window should appear, be sure that the action it exhibits is correct, and then press the Continue button.
