Each Tile on the Modern UI that switches over to the Desktop to get the job done represents a part of the Windows 8 operating system that is currently unfinished or an outright failure. Within the Metro-side Internet Explorer, each time it had to be run
on the desktop in order to run right, that was a frustrating failure right from the start -- much of that was fixed when they finally plugged Flash Player into the Metro-side of Internet Explorer. However, Silverlight applications like Netflix are still unusable
on the Metro-side of IE, and have to be run from the desktop, since the Netflix app still has missing features.

Here are a list of essential Tiles that I have on my Modern UI Start-Screen, each of which switch me over to the desktop in order to do their job.
1) Computer or My Computer, and other Windows Explorer tools. They need a Windows Explorer or My Computer Metro app.
2) Task Manager. They need a fully functional Metro version of Task Manager.
3) Control Panel. They need a full-featured Metro version of Control Panel that doesn't automatically switch us to the Desktop.
4) CCleaner. There needs to be a Windows 8 app for CCleaner that runs on the Start Screen in order for Windows 8 to be complete.
5) Homegroup and Libraries -- again we need a full-scale Metro-side Windows Explorer.
6) For Netflix and a few other things, there needs to be a Silverlight extension that works on the Modern UI version of Internet Explorer.
7) I need a Modern UI version of Spotify and Pandora that actually allow the music to run in the background. Right now, these programs only run in the background if they are run on the Desktop side of things.
8) Need a Metro UI version of LibreOffice, or comparable Microsoft Office programs or Microsoft Works programs that run and stay on the Metro-side of things.
9) I would like a Modern UI version of Notepad++.
10) I would like a Modern UI version of Media Player, because the 'Music' tile doesn't seem to work right yet, and isn't intuitive.
11) We need a Metro-side tile that displays the right-side desktop taskbar information on the Modern UI, especially the action center, the 'Safely Remove Hardware', the clock, the sound volume, possibly incoming mail, and keyboard status such as Caps Lock,
Num Lock, and Scroll Lock for all the wireless keyboards. Or, we need a taskbar on the Metro-Side of things, so that we don't have to go to the desktop to get the information. There is plenty of space to put a fully functional CLOCK on the Metro-side of
the OS.
12) We need a Command Prompt Tile that works and stays on the Metro Side of things.
13) We need 'Shut Down', 'Restart', 'Hibernate', and 'Sleep' tiles for the Modern UI side of things.
14) Each of the different Cloud Drive services need to be encouraged and helped to develop full-featured Modern UI tiles that work as well on the Metro-side as they do on the Desktop side -- starting with SkyDrive itself.
15) We need a fully-functional Start Button tile on the Metro Side of the Start Screen.
16) Someday, there needs to be a Google Chrome Windows 8 app for the Modern UI, since some websites simply run better on Google Chrome.

Each time one of these applications pulls us over to the Desktop side of things in order to get the work done in a timely and productive fashion, then that affects performance and serves as a reminder that Windows 8 is still an unfinished product.

I love Windows 8. I just wish that they would finish what they started and remove every excuse we have for switching over to the desktop side of things in order to get our daily tasks done. Will Microsoft finish what they started?

First I would suggest you to verify if the Tablet PC you are using has the option of Auto Rotate.
You may check with the tablet PC manual or with the computer manufacturer about the option for Auto Rotate.
If you have the option for Auto Rotate, you

If your Tablet PC has the option and if it’s not working you may have to contact the computer manufacturer and download the drivers or the program for Auto Rotate to work.

Downloaded IE10 for 64 bit operating system - is anyone having trouble with Java?

I downloaded IE 10 for 64-bit system Windows 7 this past week along with other Microsoft updates. I currently have Java 7.0.150.3 but I notice that on bank website I can't download copy of cancelled checks as page comes up blank, everything else is fine.
Also on another website I can access the site but when I go to enter information on a different page, it gives me a message about a Java error. Does anyone know what Java I should have?

I have been told that in earlier versions of Word that selecting the last paragraph mark and changing things such as font size risks corrupting the document.
Is this true in Word 2010? Or was it ever true?

Our situation is that we often end a document with a table, and a blank last page is created if the last paragraph mark (that follows the table) will not fit on the same page with the last table.
This can usually be fixed by selecting the last paragaph mark,
setting the space before and space after to zero, and/or setting the font size to 1.
Is this a safe practice, or can we expect to see corrupted documents popping up soon?

In 20 years of dealing with Word, I've never found that changing the font formatting of the final paragraph mark had any likelihood of corrupting the document, nor have I heard from anyone else that they saw that happen.
There are other things that can
corrupt documents, and those corruptions often are stored in the part of a binary *.doc file represented by the final paragraph mark; but that isn't at all the same thing as formatting the mark.
If anything, it's even less likely in a *.docx file, which is
really a zip file containing mostly XML rather than binary data.

I have read over the forums and can not find anything...
so any help you can offer is really appreciated. No matter how I set my power schemes, the display always shuts off after 30 minutes, unless of course I set it to less than 30. Normally, I would
be okay with a 30 minute display shutdown, but I was watching a movie in Media Center and at 30, the screen went blank and the movie muted, but continued to play. When i moved the mouse the display came back on. It does the same thing outside of Media Center
so I don't believe media center is the problem. I've added schemes, adjusted schemes, checked advanced properties and it will always turn the display off at 30 minutes. I'm quite frustrated. Thanks in advance for the help.

OK, so I may have just found my own solution. Apparently, ASUS packages a utility with their motherboards called EPU-4 Engine. It was set to a 30 minute display timeout.

I have the following problem on my new HP 8560w Elitebook laptop, running Windows 7 - 64 bit.

When the Windows+P shortcut is pressed (or fn-f4), the Display Mode / Presentation Mode selection screen appears for a very short period of time (0-2 seconds), but then disappears.
The Aero peek and preview screens have a similar problem.
This problem
only occurs when the laptop is docked, and is independent of what, if anything, is plugged into the dock (including the power cable).
HP has not been able to resolve the problem.
I have made sure all drivers are up to date, investigated via clean startup,
and myriad other tips from the web.
The only think I've found to work around the Aero problems (and this is really weird), if I use the Windows+T shortcut to bring focus to the Windows Taskbar, then the peek and preview functions properly.
I have not found
any solution for the Display Mode / Presentation Mode selection, so if I need to change mode, I have to have quick fingers and / or try it several times.

Can anyone offer any insight into this problem?

Search "MSCONFIG" and Open.
Click on Boot Tab
Tick Safe Boot in Boot Option
Select Network.
