After removing Real Player, I can no longer open shortcuts from desktop.
Original Title:How do I fix shortcut problem
On Tues 06/28/11 I used IOBOT Advanced System Care 4 Uninstall (advanced deep uninstall) utility to remove real player. I didn't know it tied in with Windows Media Player 11. WPM 11 was also deleted. I could not open anything from my desktop shortcuts.
I tried to open IE7 with open with IE. Would not open. It converted all my desktop icons to open with IE. Went to help and support in start menu for system restore, but could not access it. So on the advise of the Tech person of the company that built
my desktop (custom made locally) I used my Widows XP Home Edition disc's repair setup to try to repair Windows. That worked. Reinstalled SP3 and all updates and WPM11. All my desktop short cuts were still open with IE. Was able to access system restore,
but the big problem is that I am not able to go to any date prior to 06/28. I sent an e-mail to Microsoft Help stating all of the above, but all I received was an e-mail with a link on how to use system restore. I do not have any external drive that can
hold 50GB of data (I have an 80 GB hard drive). Is there any way to fix this problem short of erasing the hard drive and starting from scratch? I thought of deleting all short cuts that are open with IE, but then would lose everything in programs in start.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Manually editing the Windows registry
Caution: Unless you an advanced PC user, please do not edit the Windows registry manually.
Because of this risk, we highly recommend using a trusted registry cleaner such as SmartPCFixer Using a registry cleaner automates the process of finding invalid registry entries, missing file references (like the one causing your MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION error), and broken links within the registry. A backup is automatically created before each scan, with the ability to undo any changes in a single click, protecting you against the possibility of PC damage. The best part is that repairing registry errors can also dramatically improve system speed and performance.
- Click the Start button.
- Type "command" in the search box... DO NOT hit ENTER yet!
- While holding CTRL-Shift on your keyboard, hit ENTER.
- You will be prompted with a permission dialog box.
- Click Yes.
- A black box will open with a blinking cursor.
- Type "regedit" and hit ENTER.
- In the Registry Editor, select the Error 0x9C-related key (eg. Windows Operating System) you want to back up.
- From the File menu, choose Export.
- In the Save In list, select the folder where you want to save the Windows Operating System backup key.
- In the File Name box, type a name for your backup file, such as "Windows Operating System Backup".
- In the Export Range box, be sure that "Selected branch" is selected.
- Click Save.
- The file is then saved with a .reg file extension.
- You now have a backup of your MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION-related registry entry.
The next steps in manually editing your registry will not be discussed in this article due to the high risk of damaging your system. If you would like to learn more about manual registry editing, please see the links below.
